Medications used during school hours must be administered and/or supervised by the School Nurse according to a specific medication plan. This plan must include written directions from the prescribing physician, including time, dose, and type. Medications are stored in the nurse’s office at all times, with the exception of being brought on field trips when necessary. Medications scheduled after 10AM will not be administered on half days in the schools that are dismissed at 10:15. Medications scheduled after 11AM will not be administered on half days in the schools that are dismissed at 11:15. School Nurses will arrange with parents and make sure that this is acceptable. Tylenol, Tums, and Ora-gel are available to any student who has returned a signed Parent Authorization for Over-the-Counter Medications form. This one form will allow the school nurse to administer these medications when needed throughout the school day. Physical Exams are required upon entrance to the school system, in fourth, sixth, and ninth grades, and yearly for students enrolled in sports programs sponsored by the school system. Immunizations are a requirement for entrance to all schools. Massachusetts Public Health Law requires that students without acceptable health records be withdrawn from school after a five-day grace period. |
