Special Education Eligibility

Special Education services are provided to students aged 3-22yrs. with disabilities. Eligibility for Special Education in Massachusetts requires that the child's TEAM (including parents, school staff and any other attending members) answer the following three questions:

1. Does the student have one or more of the following types of disability?

Crayons

·          Autism ·          Emotional
·          Developmental Delay ·          Communication
·          Intellectual ·          Physical
·          Sensory/Hearing, Vision, Deaf-blind ·          Specific Learning
·          Neurological ·          Health

2. Is the student making effective progress in school and is the lack of progress a result of the student's disability?

3. Does the student require specially designed instruction in order to make effective progress in school?

If the TEAM answers "yes" to all of the above questions, the student is eligible for Special Education services and an Individual Education Program (IEP) is written by the TEAM, which describes the type and amount of specialized services to be provided.
