How to Frame Your Child's Artwork

Ruth Suyenaga, Art Teacher

I would like to encourage parents to frame your children's paintings and drawings.  It can be a wonderful gift for family or a remembrance for you of this stage in your child’s creative development. What I framed of my own children’s artwork now brings back precious memories (I wish that I had done more).

Framing children's artwork can be done inexpensively by going to Walmart or Michael’s, where you can buy a pre-made frame, and if desired, a mat (the cardboard border that goes between the glass and the painting). I sometimes buy the inexpensive framed prints, take out the print and put in what I want in the frame.  It may require some trimming.

This method is much less expensive than custom framing, although that is an option…Surroundings Gallery, Chair City Decorating, and Michael’s are places that can do that for you. A medium priced alternative is to shrink wrap the artwork…a parent recently told me that she had it done at Surroundings Gallery.

The artwork should not be hung in direct sunlight, as works on paper can fade. If you have any questions about this, write me a note or leave a phone message at 1-978-632-5480 (HMS) and I will call you back.
