As part of our Relay Recess campaign, we will present an episode from Marc Brown’s Arthur series titled, “The Great MacGrady,” on Friday, April 13th. In this episode, several students experience a wide range of emotions as they deal with the cancer diagnosis of their beloved lunch lady, Mrs. MacGrady. Some of the characters go out of their way to show kindness and support for Mrs. MacGrady. Other characters deal with the diagnosis by pretending as though nothing is wrong, and other characters are filled with fear.
The writers of this episode do a wonderful job of acknowledging the very real emotions, questions, and misconceptions that children, and adults, experience when faced with a cancer diagnosis. We are confident that this episode of Arthur will help us to provide a safe forum for our children to ask questions, as well as for us to present accurate information at an age appropriate level.
We invite you to view the episode as well, so that you are prepared with any questions or concerns your child may have following our classroom lesson. You may view the episode by clicking on the video below.
